Google Ads vs Facebook Ads: Choosing a Starting Point

A practical way for small businesses to choose between search intent and social discovery when planning a first paid campaign.

Start with the customer’s situation

Google Ads usually reaches people who are actively searching for a solution. Meta platforms can help introduce an offer to people based on interests, behaviour, creative, and audience signals. Neither channel is automatically better.

Choose Google Ads when intent is clear

Search can be a sensible starting point when customers already use specific terms to find a service, product, or local provider. Begin with a narrow set of relevant queries, a useful landing page, and conversion tracking that has been tested.

Choose social ads when discovery and demonstration matter

Social campaigns can be useful when the offer needs a visual explanation, a new audience, or repeated exposure. Use honest creative, a clear next step, and an audience that is relevant to the real service area.

Measure the business outcome

Do not judge a campaign only by impressions or cheap clicks. Track qualified enquiries, completed actions, cost per useful lead, and what happened after the click. Stop or revise campaigns when tracking cannot distinguish real enquiries from accidental interactions.

Use both carefully

A small business may test one channel first, learn which message earns qualified interest, and then expand. The landing page, offer, contact route, and privacy disclosures should remain consistent across channels.

Practical rule: choose the channel that matches the customer’s decision stage, then run a small, measurable test. Paid traffic can support discovery, but it cannot replace a clear offer or trustworthy website.
